Ferring Church of England Primary School

An Inspiring Place to Grow, Believe and Achieve

PE CURRICULUM INTENT

INTENT:

At Ferring Primary School we provide an inclusive, broad and balanced PE curriculum that children enjoy and allows them to experience a range of activities to help them develop their health, fitness and wellbeing.  In doing so, they develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of activities.  We offer a high quality PE curriculum that inspires children to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities.  We provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness and to aspire to ACHIEVE their personal best.  We ensure children progress by building on previously learnt skills and knowledge.  The Subject leader has developed progression documents with the support of a secondary school PE specialist which gives children the opportunity to build on skills needed to meet the end of KS objectives in the National Curriculum.   At Ferring Primary School we feel it is important to give all children opportunities to take part in competitive sport (through both inter- and intra- sports competitions) and other activities throughout the year, to help them to GROW in character and help embed key values and transferrable skills such as fairness and respect.  We want children to develop as young leaders with the associated skills and offer this through the roles of Sports Ambassadors, House Captains and Play Leaders.

Swimming is an important life skill, and as such we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres.

The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils: develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities; are physically active for sustained periods of time; engage in competitive sports and activities; lead healthy, active lives

Our Intent seeks to enable this and is aligned with the principles of the National School Games Platinum Award which we proudly hold, having achieved in 2019.

IMPLEMENTATION:

Our children are taught by both teaching staff and, regularly, a sports specialist from Reception to Year 6. They receive two hours of high quality PE lessons per week.  We follow the guidelines set by the national curriculum to ensure we offer a range of PE activities that allow each child to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further.  The lessons build on previous skills learnt and developed.  Our PE curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area (we have very strong links with our locality schools and within the National School Games Southern Area) and a variety of after school clubs.  Our involvement in termly intra and inter school competitions, such as the Virtual Multi-Skills or Great Cluster Run, allows every single child to get a sense of competing against class mates, other houses, other year groups and other schools.   Swimming in lower KS2 and top up swimming available to Year 6 children that cannot yet swim at least 25m offers the chance for us to see as many of our children as possible leave school able to swim confidently.  Children are trained as play leaders within the upper KS2 curriculum in order to supervise and lead sporting and other activities during lunchtimes.   We seek opportunities to bring active learning into other areas of the curriculum through strategies such as Sensory Circuits and Brain Gym.  Annually we take part in National Sports week when we have an even greater focus on sporting activities, including our School Games Sports Day.  We also incorporate the Active Mile into our practice in order to further benefit cognition and well-being.

In EYFS there is a focus on physical development including co-ordination, control and movement.  Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

In KS1 children develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.  Children are taught to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities

In KS2 children continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

INTENDED IMPACT:

By the end of each key stage, children are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. At Ferring Primary School we use formative assessment to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers planning, ensuring our curriculum is progressive.

Our children have a secure understanding of the benefits of leading healthy lifestyles.  They progress well through each year group and meet the National Curriculum objectives.  They are eager to attend after school clubs and competitive sports events.  We provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.  Every child at Ferring Primary School represents our school in a sporting competition.  Our children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school.  All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson.  Year 6 children leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25metres competently, using a range of strokes effectively, for example front crawl, back stroke and breast stroke.

SCHOOL SPORTS PREMIUM FUNDING:

The Government provides each primary school throughout England with additional funding which is to be spent on improving the sports provision within schools. At Ferring Primary School we believe a high quality PE curriculum should be an integral part of the whole school curriculum and one that staff, pupils and parents understand and can contribute to.  Our school recognises the values that a high quality PE and school sport curriculum gives pupils.  Please visit the Sport Premium information page to find out more about what we have been doing with the Sports Premium Funding.
