Ferring Church of England Primary School

An Inspiring Place to Grow, Believe and Achieve

Spelling Quest

Ferring Spelling Quest is a spelling system to engage pupils at Ferring C of E Primary School in learning their spellings and rewarding them for their hard work. Spelling has much more weighting in the English National Curriculum and there are particular spelling patterns and common exception words that pupils must learn to be working at the expected standard in their year group.

Pupils have weekly spelling lessons in school where they are taught spelling patterns from the national curriculum.  Pupils then bring home individual spelling lists to learn and the following week they are tested on these spellings.  The ‘Spelling Quest’ is in addition to this and pupils will be tested at the end of every half term on spellings from the National Curriculum.  In order to engage pupils in learning their spellings and reward them for their hard work we have devised a Spelling Quest with 12 fairy tale lands. The system is similar to the Times Tables system, where the pupils will be tested on their spellings and depending on their score they will move through fairy tale lands on the spelling display.

This display is in the front entrance where you will be able to see where the pupils have got to on their spelling quest as, once pupils enter the quest; their photograph will be moved to the relevant fairy tale land that they have travelled to depending on the scores from their half termly spelling tests. Pupils will move through the fairy tale lands at different rates.

There are ten fairy tale lands: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Diamond, Jadeite, Red Beryl, Fire Opal, Alexandrite and Painite.  These lands are associated with particular spelling patterns and common exception words.  The aim is that pupils will be tested at the end of every half term and pupils will come home with a list of the spellings so you can see which spellings they are getting correct and those they need to revise at home further.

Pupils will earn certificates to celebrate their achievements for entering a new land and be given a gemstone in assembly to add to a class treasure chest.  At the end of the year, the class with the most gemstones will earn a prize to reward their hard work, but also individual pupils will have their achievements celebrated during Golden Award assemblies.  We are looking forward to implementing this with the children and helping pupils develop their spellings further.

Here you can find the spelling lists pupils are tested on to enter each fairy tale land and the testing templates for pupils to revise the spellings at home.
