We are a healthy school.

Mr Harris, the Travel Coordinator, holds regular meetings with our Junior Road Safety Officers (from Year 6) to discuss the School Travel Plan. This includes talking about any travel problems and planning new ways to promote safe, healthy travel.

Travel Registers

  • Every day, each class fills in a colourful “Walk Once a Week” travel register to see how the children have travelled to school that day. Healthy journeys contribute to each class’s score, and a trophy is handed out each month to the class that has made the largest number of healthy journeys. Walking, cycling, scooting, and “Park and Stride” all count as healthy journeys.
  • To receive a badge for the month, a child should make at least one healthy journey to school per week.

Park and Stride

  • For those who live too far from school to walk or cycle, why not park your car a short way away from the school and walk/cycle/scoot the rest of the way? “Park and Stride”, sometimes called “Car-Walk”, is a popular journey type for many children at our school.

Safe Cycling

  • Children in Year 6 gain the skills and confidence to cycle safely by taking part in cycle training week (Autumn term), while children in Early Years have enjoyed their Bike Balance training.

Special Events

  • Once a term, teachers and children gather and walk to school together. These walks are very popular and some teachers have been known to arrive in costume!
  • We take part in Walk to School Week (May), the Giant Walking Bus (June), and other travel events (throughout the year).

Permits

  • As part of our Cycling/Scooting to School Policy, all children who cycle or scoot to school sign a form to confirm they will ride safely. In return, they receive a permit. Our JRSOs will check for these!

Parking

  • We occasionally encounter problems with inconsiderate parking at the beginning and end of the school day. All parents are encouraged to sign up to our Parking Promise, which encourages them to park safely, drive safely, and (if possible) park outside our school zone. (A map of the zone can be viewed near the school office.)
  • Parents can only park in the car park if they have requested and been given special permission.
