Dear Parents and Carers of Year 5,

Welcome to Year 5’s Home Learning page! I do hope you all had a wonderful week and relaxing weekend! Don't forget that it is a four-day week this week as Friday is a Bank Holiday to give you all the opportunity to take part in VE Day celebrations!  On the 8th May 2020 it is the 75th anniversary of VE Day – which marks the end of World War Two. I have uploaded home-learning tasks for the week ahead with this in mind and I am not expecting you to do home-learning on Friday, but if your child does want to do something on Friday, there are extension activities on this page and other tasks you could choose from.  Please scroll down to the VE Day Celebration section for activities and resources.

Below are a few important updates about home-learning:

Firstly, from this week onward we would like pupils' work and photographs of home-learning to be uploaded to a program called Tapestry.  This is an online program we already use for Reception pupils and now it has been purchased for this period of home-learning for all the other pupils in school.  You should have received an email about setting up Tapestry for your child/children with details of how to access it online.  From now on we would like the pupils work to be uploaded to this site: https://tapestryjournal.com/

Tapestry is an online journal to help record the learning your child is doing at home including photographs (should you wish to upload them) of activities they do such as baking, garden activities, arts and crafts and more.  You can upload photographs of pupils' home-learning and home-time activities to share with me and you can also upload your child's work onto this site instead of emailing it. I will login to Tapestry and mark your child's learning and give them feedback online on Tapestry.  Please follow the instructions from the email sent to you about setting up Tapestry. If you have any difficulties using this site then please let me know.  We are switching over to this site from Monday 4th May but I am still available by email (year5@ferringceschool.co.uk) for any queries you have or if you need help with anything.

Secondly, some of you reported that Reading Planet was not working properly for your child.  I am pleased to say that the technical issue has now been fixed by the company who operate Reading Planet so it is ready to use again. We are sorry for the inconvenience but hopefully it now works for everybody.  Do please let me know if any other difficulties are experienced with this program.  Thank you!

On this class web page, you will find more than is expected to be completed this week as some of you will want some further challenges. There are extra extension activities and web links for those of you who have time and want an extra challenge!  We really want you to be continuing your learning at home but also have time with your family and to have rest periods where you can step away from the screen/work and have time to be you.  All we ask is that you try your best and do what you can but please don't worry about home-learning!  Below is a reminder of how much we hope will be completed each week but I will load up further resources and challenges for those of you who have time and want to do them.  Remember, if you have any queries or if you need further support, please let me know by emailing me at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.

Your children will have lots of activities they can get stuck into during this period of remote learning - so keep a close eye on Singapore Class's Home-Learning page and the main Home-Learning page for links to activities your child can take part in.  Mr Virgo has set up a link to a Science page on the main Home-Learning page with links to lots of science resources and activities.  He would love to see any photographs, videos or work produced linked to any science activities you undertake.  Please send these to Mr Virgoe at: year3@ferringceschool.co.uk.

Thank you to you and your child/children for their hard work to continue their education at home!

Please keep checking this page weekly for any updates.

Warm regards,

Miss Squires

English Reading:

Reading for Pleasure:

Pupils should continue to read for pleasure recording the book title, number of pages read and the author of the book.  These details can be recorded in their Home Reading Diaries.  If pupils cannot find their diary they can log this in the back of their Home Learning Book.

Pupils can choose books from home as well as from books set online on 'Reading Planet'.  These can be fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. The books can be in paper or online formats.  Newspapers, graphic novels, research done online all count as well as poems and play scripts.  A good test to check if a text is at the right level for your child is the five finger test:

English Reading Activities:

Pupils should complete at least two reading tasks per week.  This week I'd like the pupils to login to 'Reading Planet' and read at least one of the books which I have assigned them and complete the quizzes linked to the book chosen. I have uploaded a range of fiction and non-fiction texts for you to choose from. You can read more than one book if you have time.

Information about Reading Planet:

We have signed up to 'Reading Planet' from Rising Stars where pupils can access e-books to read online and take part in mid-point and end of reading quizzes. I have assigned a reading book for the pupils to read and I will add a new online reading e-book each week from a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. The 'Reading Planet' website can be accessed by clicking on the URL below.  Pupils will need a username and password to access the site which I have emailed to those of you whose email addresses I already have.  If you need your child's login details for Reading Planet please email me at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.

English Writing:

There will be one unit uploaded each week which could involve daily activities.

Please upload the finished writing to your child's Tapestry profile: https://tapestryjournal.com/

If you experience any problems with this please email me at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.

Pupils work can be uploaded whenever it is finished but definitely by the Monday of the following week from when it was done. This means I can read through all the writing from each week and give individual feedback on Tapestry.

I'm looking forward to reading the writing produced!

'Floodland', by Marcus Sedgwick, can be still be accessed id your child still wants to continue listening to the story.  Marcus Sedgwick (the author) reads each chapter and they can be found on the website below:

Something a little bit different:

A company called Mogzilla (who usually deliver Creative Writing and Historical Workshops in schools) have been in touch to ask us to let you know that they are presenting live workshops online on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10.30 am.  This week on Tuesday the Creative writing workshop links to The Anglo-Saxons and Beowulf which is the subject of the writing tasks I have set. The workshop may complement this week's tasks or be instead of them. If you would like to take part in the creative writing workshop/s please download the details below and follow the links to the company's page and their link to the resources needed.

I have not set this as our weekly writing activity as it involves accessing Facebook to watch the live workshops and pupils need to be 13 or over to have a Facebook account.  If you are happy to allow your child access to view the live workshop with your supervision to take part in this creative writing workshop, please feel free to do this and this can form part of or all of your writing activity this week instead of the above writing tasks.  I have included all the upcoming workshop dates and subjects.  If you do take part in any of these workshops please let me know how they go and please send me any writing produced to: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.

Topic Activities:

Week 3 Summer Term  History -based topic tasks linked to The Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots.

What can you remember about who the Anglo-Saxons were?

After the Romans left, the Angles, Jutes and Saxons managed to invade and settle in most parts of Britain but there was one area they couldn’t conquer straight away. Do you know where this was? Just like the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons were not able to conquer the people living in the north of Britain, in what is now Scotland, as it was settled by two different groups: the Scots and the Picts. What do you already know about Picts and Scots? What do you think these groups of people might have been like?

Read through the information on the slides below to find out about the Picts and Scots and in what ways their lives were similar/different to the Anglo-Saxons. Then complete either the Bronze, Silver or Gold Challenge using the resources below:

Bronze = Read the Picts eBook and then answer the questions on sheet 3A.

Silver = Read the Scots eBook and then answer the questions on sheet 3B.

Gold = Read the Picts and Scots eBooks and then answer the questions on sheet 3C.

The Answers to Sheet 3A, 3B and 3C are attached to the Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots resources below.

Extra Challenge = The Picts carved lots of standing stones using patterns, symbols and the ogham alphabet. Design your own Pictish standing stone on sheet 3D or on A4 paper. Can you write your name in ogham? Can you decorate it in the Pictish style?

See the resource sheets below to help you with examples of the ogham alphabet.

If you have clay and want to create your own standing stone, look through the Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots resources to find and use the instructions to make your own.
