Dear Parents and Carers of Year 5,

Welcome to Year 5’s Home Learning page! I do hope you all had a wonderful week last week and a great bank holiday weekend!

Below I have uploaded home-learning tasks for the week ahead.  On this class web page, you will find more than is expected to be completed this week as some of you will want some further challenges. There are extra extension activities and web links for those of you who have time and want an extra challenge!  We really want you to be continuing your learning at home but also have time with your family and to have rest periods where you can step away from the screen/work and have time to be you.  All we ask is that you try your best and do what you can but please don't worry about home-learning!  Below is a reminder of how much we hope will be completed each week but I will load up further resources and challenges for those of you who have time and want to do them.  Remember, if you have any queries or if you need further support, please let me know by emailing me at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.

Information about setting up Tapestry was sent out to parents last week via Parent Mail. This online program is already used for Reception pupils and now it has been purchased for this period of home-learning for all the other pupils in school.  Please visit

https://tapestryjournal.com/ to access this site. Tapestry is an online journal to help record the learning your child is doing at home.  You can upload photographs of pupils' home-learning and home-time activities to share with me and you can also upload your child's work onto this site instead of emailing it. I can then login to Tapestry and mark your child's learning and give them feedback online on Tapestry.  If you haven't already, please follow the instructions from the email sent to you about setting up Tapestry. If you have any difficulties using this site then please let me know. I am still available by email (year5@ferringceschool.co.uk) for any queries you have or if you need help with anything. I am really impressed with the work being produced at home and thank you for loading up photographs of your child's home-learning where I can see all the wonderful things they are doing! With all this superb work being produced, I will be handing out Golden Awards and subject specific certificates each week so look out in your Tapestry profile for one appearing soon.  I will choose at least 3 pupils for golden awards each week (like we would for a Friday's Golden Award Assembly) and any number of subject specific certificates.

Your children will continue to have lots of activities they can get stuck into during this period of remote home-learning - so please keep a close eye on Singapore Class's Home-Learning page and the main Home-Learning page for links to activities your child can take part in.  There is a link to a Science page full of activities and resources on the main Home-Learning page with links to lots of science resources and activities your child can be doing.  Mr Virgoe would love to see any photographs, videos or work produced linked to any science activities you undertake.  Please send these to Mr Virgoe at: year3@ferringceschool.co.uk

I wanted to end by saying a HUGE thank you to you all for continuing with home-learning in these challenging times when I'm sure you all have lots of other tasks and activities needing to be done and fitting in home-learning around everything else can be a challenge too. Thank you to you and your child/children for their hard work to do what they can in these uncertain times and thank you for your help to continue your child's education at home!  You are doing an AMAZING job, thank you!

Kind regards,

Miss Squires

English Reading:

Reading for Pleasure:

Pupils should continue to read for pleasure recording the book title, number of pages read and the author of the book.  These details can be recorded in their Home Reading Diaries.  If pupils cannot find their diary they can log this in the back of their Home Learning Book.

Pupils can choose books from home as well as from books set online on 'Reading Planet'.  These can be fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. The books can be in paper or online formats.  Newspapers, graphic novels, research done online all count as well as poems and play scripts.  A good test to check if a text is at the right level for your child is the five finger test:

English Reading Activities:

Pupils should complete at least two reading tasks per week.  This week I'd like the pupils to login to 'Reading Planet' and read at least one of the books which I have assigned them and complete the quizzes linked to the book chosen. I have uploaded a range of fiction and non-fiction texts for you to choose from. You can read more than one book if you have time.

Information about Reading Planet:

We have signed up to 'Reading Planet' from Rising Stars where pupils can access e-books to read online and take part in mid-point and end of reading quizzes. I have assigned reading books for the pupils to choose to read and I will add new online reading e-books each week from a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. The 'Reading Planet' website can be accessed by clicking on the URL below.  Pupils will need their username and password to access the site which I have emailed to those of you whose email addresses I already have.  If you need your child's login details for Reading Planet please email me at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.

Something a little bit different:

A company called Mogzilla (who usually deliver Creative Writing and Historical Workshops in schools) have been in touch to ask us to let you know that they are presenting live workshops online on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10.30 am.  This week on Tuesday the Creative writing workshop links to The Anglo-Saxons and Beowulf which is the subject of the writing tasks I have set. The workshop may complement this week's tasks or be instead of them. If you would like to take part in the creative writing workshop/s please download the details below and follow the links to the company's page and their link to the resources needed.

I have not set this as our weekly writing activity as it involves accessing Facebook to watch the live workshops and pupils need to be 13 or over to have a Facebook account.  If you are happy to allow your child access to view the live workshop with your supervision to take part in this creative writing workshop, please feel free to do this and this can form part of or all of your writing activity this week instead of the above writing tasks.  I have included all the upcoming workshop dates and subjects.  If you do take part in any of these workshops please let me know how they go and please send me any writing produced to: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.
