I am recommending daily home learning for Y6 pupils using one of these three schemes of work:

I will continue to set weekly learning activities from the  Ferring Y6 Curriculum objectives for the Summer Term and these can be found on this page and on the separate English and Maths pages accessed by clicking on the Algeria Maths and Algeria English page links below.

The Oak National Academy schedule consists of a daily video lesson on English, Maths and a foundation subject with follow up activities that can be completed online. This is an excellent resource and offers a straightforward and streamlined curriculum ideal for busy parents.

The BBC Bitesize home learning schedule also provides daily lessons in English, Maths and foundation subjects supported by videos and follow-up activities that can be downloaded/printed to be completed at home. This is also an excellent resource.

I strongly recommend selecting and following just one of these options consistently over the week to ensure a coherent learning progression. Please do send in any work - or upload onto Tapestry - whatever programme of home learning you choose. I will feedback on all work you send in, no matter what it is! :)

All classes are now using Tapestry Learning Journals to keep a record of all your brilliant home learning achievements. Parent should have log in details to your journal to upload photos, documents and videos of your activities across the curriculum. I will use the comment boxes to feedback on how you are doing. Look out for special projects and activities set on Tapestry: see below for details of the May Reading Challenge! :)

Contact me or the school office if you do not have a Tapestry log in.

PE ACTIVITIES AT HOME

Ferring CE Primary School is one of 250 schools in Sussex competing in the Virtual Sussex School Games which began last week with a series of hockey challenges to do at home!

We came 15th out of 250!

Congratulations to all who have already signed up to take part!

Not registered to compete but would like to? Click here for details of how to register and what this week's sports challenges are.

MUSIC AT HOME

PopUK have started to release 'A Song a Day' for kids learning at home. These fun songs are in a range of pop styles and include dance moves - ideal if you prefer dancing to sport as a way of keeping fit. Also perfect if you love to sing :)

Anyone else miss singing assemblies? I do! I'll be bopping (badly) and singing (loudly) into my hair brush around my front room to these grooves ;)

Click on the song links below to go straight to the videos.

West Sussex Music and Sing Up have also released a new song by Emily Barden. Click the link for 'Wiggle Jiggle' for a dance moves tutorial, song and backing tracks.

You can post any videos of your own singing/dancing splendour on Tapestry - Go on! Get your funk on, Algeria Class! :D

ART/GEOGRAPHY

Last week's Art and Geography project is still open to those who would like to have a go at it:

  • A map of your own fantasy land
  • A landscape drawing/painting based on a place in your own fantasy land

You can choose which you would prefer to do. You can, if you wish and have time, have a go at both!

See below for some examples of fantasy land maps and landscapes for inspiration.

Photograph or scan any art work you do and send in to: year6@ferringceschool.co.uk

The Ferring School Home Learning web pages now have a dedicated Science area created by Mr Virgoe here with ideas and activities to help you continue to develop your scientific knowledge and skills at home. The current Year 6 Science topic is Evolution and Inheritance. Check out the resources on the Science page for this. Don't forget to send any photos, scans or documents of your work into year6@ferringceschool.co.uk for feedback and celebration. :)

Check it out! Sammy's Friction & Magnets investigations, Ben's Amazing Beanstalk and Evaporation Experiment, Ilana's Evolution research! The Book of Hopes - Y6 May Reading Challenge

Children's author Katherine Rundell has brought together lots of children's authors to create 'The Book of Hopes', an ebook of short stories, poems and ideas for children to read during lockdown.

My challenge is to find the book online here and choose a story or poem to record yourself reading aloud. This can be an audio or video presentation which can be uploaded onto Tapestry.

It's a voluntary project - meaning you don't have to do it - but I hope you'll give it a go!

If you are happy to share your reading with other children, let me know. If not, it will just be shared between you and me, promise.

I have opened the challenge by reading the first story 'A Song of Gladness' by Michael Morpurgo - see above :)

Miss Squires has uploaded a weekly newspaper page onto our Home Learning site. You can read First News here on the website or download a copy. There are activities and quizzes for you to keep your current affairs knowledge fresh and active. Reading First News could be your daily reading for pleasure activity. Check it out! Send in your responses to quizzes and activities on First News for feedback and celebration to year6@ferringceschool.co.uk
ENVIRONMENT

Ocean Hero is a search engine to use when browsing the internet, like Google, but this browser pledges to help clean the world's oceans of plastic rubbish every time you use it. Ocean Hero works with other eco-organisations to pay people living in some of the poorest regions for plastic waste they have picked from their local shores and taken to a recycling centre. For more information about the Ocean Hero search engine, click on their webpage and on the link to a video explaining how Ocean Hero works.

Thank you Chloe for suggesting this as a way we can use home learning to create a cleaner, greener world.
