Your Letters from Lockdown

Thank you for your letters from lockdown to explain what life has been like for you and for your super messages for your classmates!

AMAZING POEMS ABOUT BRAVERY WRITTEN BY SINGAPORE CLASS

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 5,

Welcome to Year 5’s Home Learning page! I hope you all had a great week last week! If your child is finding this period of home-learning more of a challenge in recent weeks I have uploaded some resources which may help.  These can be found under the PSHCE section which includes a story which can be read with your child.  The social story 'My Hero is You' was created in collaboration with pupils, parents, care givers and teachers from 104 countries to help pupils living in countries affected by the virus.  Reading it with your child may help them with their worries and it is attached below if you would like to read it to them.  It  is not advised that they read it on their own.  Please be aware that it references the '1 metre' rule whereas in the UK the rule is '2 metres'.  Also I have attached a resource pack created for children to help them manage difficult feelings about coronavirus.  I hope you and your child are keeping well and managing in these uncertain times. Please do get in contact when needed. I can be contacted at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk

I have uploaded new home-learning activities and resources for the week ahead including the 'Spelling Quest' lists for your child to be able to continue to learn the spelling patterns and common exception words from the fairy-tale land they are on. If your child can't remember which fairy-tale land they are on, please email me. When learning their spellings, your child may find using the 'Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check' strategy useful.  I have attached a template they can use for this.  Some pupils find practising their spellings for 10 minutes a day beneficial whilst others find writing the words on paper and placing them up around the room so they see them useful.  Others find doing spelling games and activities helps them retain them so I have also attached some spelling game ideas for them to use.

Thank you for continuing with the home-learning to continue your child's education at home! Please continue to upload your child's work to your child's Tapestry profile or email it to me at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.  in order for me to mark it and send your child feedback. I'd also love to load up more photographs to the class home-learning page to share with others all the wonderful things you are doing at home.  If you and your child would like to share photographs of the things you have been doing on the class home-learning page, please email them to me at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk. Thank you!

On this page I have uploaded tasks and resources for the week ahead. Mr Ryan and Mr Virgoe have uploaded PE and Science activities and resources for your child to take part in too.  We recommend that pupils take part in at least two hours of physical activity a week. There are lots of PE activities and challenges on the main home-learning page which have been uploaded by Mr Ryan for your child to take part in so please click here for more details.  Below, I have included the details about the AMAZING Specsavers 'Virtual' Sussex School Games. Please click here to access the Science page full of activities and resources which your child can be doing.  Mr Virgoe would love to see any photographs, videos or work produced linked to any science activities you undertake.  Please send these to Mr Virgoe at: year3@ferringceschool.co.uk.

Thank you to you and your child/children for their hard work each week to do their best! I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Kind regards,

Miss Squires

Everyone needs a calm moment now and again. Colouring is an activity that sparks the logical and creative aspects of the brain into action. If you think of colouring like a mental exercise, then you're keeping your brain active and improving coordination. These mindfulness colouring pages are a great way of focusing your mind on a relaxing task. Print out the colouring pages you wish to do for when you might need a quiet moment.

Times Tables Rock Stars is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice.

Children should have their log in details but if they don't please email Miss Squires at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk

English Reading:

Reading for Pleasure:

Pupils should continue to read for pleasure recording the book title, number of pages read and the author of the book.  These details can be recorded in their Home Reading Diaries.  If pupils cannot find their diary they can log this in the back of their Home Learning Book.

Pupils can choose books from home as well as from books set online on 'Reading Planet'.  These can be fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. The books can be in paper or online formats.  Newspapers, graphic novels, research done online all count as well as poems and play scripts.  A good test to check if a text is at the right level for your child is the five finger test:

English Reading Activities:

This week I'd like the pupils to login to 'Reading Planet' and read at least one of the books which I have assigned them and complete the quizzes linked to the book chosen. I have uploaded a range of fiction and non-fiction texts for you to choose from. You can read more than one book if you have time.  Your child may want to read another book or text of their choice instead of using the Reading Planet program resources and that is fine too!

Information about Reading Planet:

We have signed up to 'Reading Planet' from Rising Stars where pupils can access e-books to read online and take part in mid-point and end of reading quizzes. I have assigned reading books for the pupils to choose to read and I will add new online reading e-books each week from a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. The 'Reading Planet' website can be accessed by clicking on the URL below.  Pupils will need their username and password to access the site which I have emailed to those of you whose email addresses I already have.  If you need your child's login details for Reading Planet please email me at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.

Topic Activities:

Week 3 Summer Term 2 Space-themed Art topic tasks.

Objective: To either create a space-themed piece of art or an origami star .

This week the topic task links with Space and Art.  Please choose whether you want to learn how to create an origami star or whether you want to create your own space-themed art scene from space or of an imaginary newly discovered planet.

Space-Art Slides and Resources:

Read through the Space-Art Session Slides. I want you to imagine that an astrologer has just discovered a new planet with evidence of extraterrestrial life and that you (an astronaut) has been sent on a special mission to investigate. Close your eyes and imagine that you are stepping onto the planet for the first time. What do you see? Smell? Hear? What is the landscape like? Can you see anyone? Who? What do they look like? When you have a picture in your mind, try to describe your newly discovered planet to another person. For this task I want you to create a piece of artwork to show what your planet is like. Use the question prompts on the Space-Art Session Slides to get you thinking about this newly discovered planet. What colours are the sky and the land? What is the terrain like? Are there buildings, transport, roads, etc.? What are the people or creatures on your planet like?

Think about how you will create your piece of art. E.g. by using collage, paint, pastels, ways of adding textures, etc. Which medium will you use and why?  Think about the resources you already have at home which you can use.

Please look at the artwork of Tony Roberts:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTfZB6qWxnk

and also look at images of other space-art creations for inspiration:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=space+art&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjN75D17YHqAhVbhlwKHXYnBxwQ_AUoAXoECBQQAw&biw=1366&bih=613&safe=active&ssui=on

Then complete either the Bronze, Silver or Gold Challenge using the resources below:

Bronze = Design your space-themed art image of your newly discovered planet on worksheet 2A. Then work independently or with an adult/sibling to create your artwork.  This may take you more than one week to complete as you will be designing your spaced-themed art image and then creating it.

Silver = Design your space-themed art image of your newly discovered planet on worksheet 2B. Then work independently to create your
artwork. This may take you more than one week to complete as you will be designing your spaced-themed art image and then creating it.

Gold = Design what the newly discovered planet will look like on worksheet 2B. Then work independently to create your artwork. This may take you more than one week to complete as you will be designing your spaced-themed art image and then creating it.

Extension - Choose a particular atmosphere for your planet, e.g. Is is scary? inviting? menacing? surreal?
Think about how you can portray this through colour, tone and texture.

Alternative activity = Choose one of the 'Picture Cards' showing a landscape photograph of Earth. Study the picture carefully. Then paint the scene as though it was a landscape of your new planet. What will you alter? What (if anything) will stay the same? What colour will the sky be? What or who will be in the place of the people? What will the grass, rocks, buildings be like? What will be added? What will be taken away? Think about these questions, jotting down your ideas if you find this useful. Then work independently to create your artwork using
whichever media is most appropriate and that you have available.

I would love to see the artwork produced! Please either upload your Space-themed Artwork to Tapestry or email them (with the help of an adult at home) to: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk

Thank you!

Origami Star-Making Slides and Resources:

Read through the Origami Session Slides.

Then complete either the Bronze, Silver or Gold Challenge using the resources below:

Bronze = Ask an adult or sibling to pre-cut 12 origami squares of paper and use the 'Help Sheet' and 'Origami Session Slides' to create an origami star. Choose which colours you would like to use to create your origami star.

Silver = Collect some coloured paper or (plain paper to decorate how you wish). Then using the 'Origami Session Slides' to support you, measure and cut out 12 squares of 6x6 inches (or 15 x 15 cm). Follow the instructions on the 'Help Sheet' to create your origami star.

Gold = Collect some coloured paper or (plain paper to decorate how you wish). Measure and cut out 12 squares in the size you would like (from 4x4 inches (10 x 10 cm) upwards). Then follow the instructions on the 'Origami Session Slides' and 'Help Sheet' to create your origami star.

Extension = Create a second and third star in a different size to create a star mobile.

Alternative activity = Experiment with creating different patterns on a graphics programme (e.g. 2Draw or another art type program). You could use a background colour and repeating pattern, stripes, spots, stars...anything they like. When you have chosen your pattern (or patterns), print off enough to make 12 squares. Then cut the patterns into squares and follow the instructions on the 'Help Sheet' to create your origami stars.  If you don't have a graphics programme you can decorate your 12 squares yourself with your own designs using the resources you have available.
