DO YOU WANT TO BE A PLAY LEADER IN YEAR 6?

Usually at this time of year Pete Gwynn would be working with some of the Year 5 pupils on training to be PALs (Play Active Leaders).  Instead, he has sent us a pack that the Year 5 children can work on at home to try and develop their PALs skills, as pupils would normally be participating in this activity this half term to learn the important skills needed to be a Play Leader.  This pack can be downloaded below along with the video which pupils can view to learn about what it is like being a Play Leader and what a Play Leader does. If you would like to be chosen to be a Play Leader in Year 6 please complete Activity 2 in the Play Leader's pack, writing your application letter addressed to Mr Ryan, Miss Squires and Mrs Teakle explaining why you want to be a Play Leader and why you would be good at it.  Please send your application letters to year5@ferringceschool.co.uk where we look forward to reading your applications ready to choose our Play Leaders for next year in Year 6.

Mindfulness Colouring Activities:

Everyone needs a calm moment now and again. Colouring is an activity that sparks the logical and creative aspects of the brain into action. If you think of colouring like a mental exercise, then you're keeping your brain active and improving coordination. These mindfulness colouring pages are a great way of focusing your mind on a relaxing task. Print out the colouring pages you wish to do for when you might need a quiet moment.

Times Tables Rock Stars:

We would like pupils to practice their times tables daily using Times Tables Rock Stars. Click on the link to open the web page:

www.ttrockstars.com

Times Tables Rock Stars is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice.

Children should have their log in details but if they don't please email Miss Squires at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk

English Reading:

Reading for Pleasure:

Pupils should continue to read for pleasure recording the book title, number of pages read and the author of the book.  These details can be recorded in their Home Reading Diaries.  If pupils cannot find their diary they can log this in the back of their Home Learning Book.

Pupils can choose books from home as well as from books set online on 'Reading Planet'.  These can be fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. The books can be in paper or online formats.  Newspapers, graphic novels, research done online all count as well as poems and play scripts.  A good test to check if a text is at the right level for your child is the five finger test:

English Reading Activities:

This week I'd like the pupils to login to 'Reading Planet' and read at least one of the books which I have assigned them and complete the quizzes linked to the book chosen. I have uploaded a range of fiction and non-fiction texts for you to choose from. You can read more than one book if you have time.  Your child may want to read another book or text of their choice instead of using the Reading Planet program resources and that is fine too!

Information about Reading Planet:

We have signed up to 'Reading Planet' from Rising Stars where pupils can access e-books to read online and take part in mid-point and end of reading quizzes. I have assigned reading books for the pupils to choose to read and I will add new online reading e-books each week from a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. The 'Reading Planet' website can be accessed by clicking on the URL below.  Pupils will need their username and password to access the site which I have emailed to those of you whose email addresses I already have.  If you need your child's login details for Reading Planet please email me at: year5@ferringceschool.co.uk.

Science Topic Activities:

Week 5 Summer Term 2 Science-based topic tasks linked to Earth and Space.

Objective: To learn about how the Earth's tilt creates seasons.

Read through the Session Slides on Earth and Space.

Then complete either the Bronze, Silver or Gold Challenge using the resources below:

Bronze = Add the Season Labels 3A to the diagram on Worksheet 3A to explain how the Earth’s tilt creates seasons.

Silver = Add the Season Labels 3B to the diagram on Worksheet 3A to explain how the Earth's tilt creates seasons.

Gold = Label the different positions of the Earth’s orbit on Worksheet 3B with the season it would be in the Northern Hemisphere and
describe how Earth’s tilt created it and what it changes using the word bank.

Alternative activity =  You will nee the Statistics Cards 3A, which show the average monthly day lengths for London (Northern Hemisphere) and Pretoria (Southern Hemisphere). If you want a further extension use Statistics Cards 3B which also include Quito (a city close to the equator).
• Create a line graph to show all three sets of data using Graph Paper 3A or Worksheet 3C. The y axis (the vertical axis) is measured in minutes and hours. Your scale needs to reflect this i.e. not in base-10 (the best scale to use is whole and half hours).
• Make observations on the different location’s graphs and what you notice.
• You could also discuss and answer Question Cards 3A/3B.
