Home Learning Algeria Class

****A message about Y6 Home Learning****

  • With the further partial reopening of school following Government guidelines there will be a change to the home learning on offer to some of our children from Monday 1st June 2020.

With Mrs Darkin, Mr Swindells, Mr Virgoe and Mrs Teakle teaching our Reception, Year 1 and Key Worker children in school full time they will no longer be able to provide the detailed, creative range of home learning activities previously available.  Therefore, children (and adults) still working brilliantly at home in Reception Class, Year 1, Year 3 and Year 6 can continue their home learning using the Oak Academy and/or BBC Bitesize websites.  As well as this the Science and PE pages are still available to take some learning opportunities from.  In addition you can click HERE for a link to the Barefoot website which has many Computational Thinking activities you can do with your children.  Although linked to developing computing skills, these are largely about problem solving and do not depend on the use of technology.  There are some fun things to try!

The teachers have really enjoyed engaging with you about your work via email and our class pages.  Unfortunately it will be incredibly difficult for them to maintain the same level of communication about work being done whilst planning and delivering the teaching and learning in school.  Please do understand that if they are unable to respond to emails or display work being done it is not because they don’t value that communication, but because their workload priorities are now back in school.  If you have an urgent email that requires a response it would be advisable to email it in to the office so we can ensure it gets to the teacher if need be.

Thank you so much for your understanding with this developing situation and for your continued efforts at home.  Home Learning for children in Years 2, 4 and 5 can continue as normal for now.

I hope you all take a break this half term and enjoy some time off :)

I am not setting any homework for you during this week.

If you would like some ideas for activities you could do during half term, see below for some I would recommend . . .

Contact:

year6@ferringceschool.co.uk

Please use this email address to contact me to ask questions or send in work or give me information that you think I might need.

I will try to respond to all queries as soon as possible.

All classes are now using Tapestry Learning Journals to keep a record of all your brilliant home learning achievements. Parent should have log in details to your journal to upload photos, documents and videos of your activities across the curriculum. I will use the comment boxes to feedback on how you are doing. Look out for special projects and activities set on Tapestry: see below for details of the May Reading Challenge! :)

Contact me or the school office if you do not have a Tapestry log in.

Activities to keep you busy at half term . . .

1.                                                 Nature Focus: Hedgehogs

Thomas has been finding out about different types of animals including hedgehogs. He has suggested using these resources to find out more about hedgehogs.

Is there an animal that you would like to find out more about?

  • Take photos or videos of animals in your garden/in the park/on your street.
  • Do a survey - which animals do you see in your neighbourhood?
  • Research and create a fact file or design a home for an animal you see a lot of in your neighbourhood.
  • Write a poem, draw a picture, make a song about your focus animal.
  • Find a website devoted to your focus animal.

2.                                            Puffin Short Story Competition

Puffin Books have announced a short story writing competition for young writers aged from 6 to 16 years old based on the theme

'Big Dreams'

This could be an ideal mini-project for half term because the closing date is 28th May - so you don't have long! Fortunately the story should not be more than 300 words - so, really short! Click on the images on either side for more information how to enter and submit your short story for this competition.

3.                                             Times Tables Rock Stars World Record

Guinness World Records has created a new title - Highest score achieved on ‘Times Tables Rock Stars’ in one minute - and we are looking for players to aim for this special accolade. All you have to do is submit a video of yourself playing a Studio game with the highest score in the world by 23:59 on

4th June 2020.

Click here for details of the TTRS World Record Competition

Don't forget to send photos, videos or documents of your activities to year6@ferringceschool.co.uk or upload onto Tapestry!

MUSIC AT HOME

PopUK have started to release 'A Song a Day' for kids learning at home. These fun songs are in a range of pop styles and include dance moves - ideal if you prefer dancing to sport as a way of keeping fit. Also perfect if you love to sing :)

Anyone else miss singing assemblies? I do! I'll be bopping (badly) and singing (loudly) into my hair brush around my front room to these grooves ;)

Click on the song links below to go straight to the videos.

West Sussex Music and Sing Up have also released a new song by Emily Barden. Click the link for 'Wiggle Jiggle' for a dance moves tutorial, song and backing tracks.

You can post any videos of your own singing/dancing splendour on Tapestry - Go on! Get your funk on, Algeria Class! :D

ENVIRONMENT

Ocean Hero is a search engine to use when browsing the internet, like Google, but this browser pledges to help clean the world's oceans of plastic rubbish every time you use it. Ocean Hero works with other eco-organisations to pay people living in some of the poorest regions for plastic waste they have picked from their local shores and taken to a recycling centre. For more information about the Ocean Hero search engine, click on their webpage and on the link to a video explaining how Ocean Hero works.

Thank you Chloe for suggesting this as a way we can use home learning to create a cleaner, greener world.
